What this solves

Switzerland has four marquee panoramic trains and a dozen lesser-known ones (Chocolate Train, Lavaux vineyard, Wilhelm Tell Express). Brochures rank them all as "world class." Travellers end up overpaying for the longest route when a shorter one matched their itinerary.

This tool ranks the four famous ones against your origin/destination and class — including a no-Supersaver fallback for fixed-date travellers. It also surfaces the surcharge the brochures bury: Glacier Express adds CHF 39 reservation in summer on top of the regular fare.

Common questions

Is the Glacier Express really the slowest express train?

Yes — it covers 291 km in about 8 hours (Zermatt to St. Moritz), averaging 36 km/h. The name "express" is historical. Most travellers enjoy it; some find it too long. Consider the Bernina Express (St. Moritz → Tirano, 4h) as a faster alternative.

Do I need a panoramic car upgrade?

No. All Glacier Express / Bernina Express / GoldenPass seats are panoramic. The extra-cost Excellence Class (Glacier Express only) is a separate premium service with 5-course meal, ≈ CHF 450 — only worth it for a special occasion.

Can I just take a regular train on the same route?

Yes — on the same track, with the same views. The "Express" branded trains have guaranteed panoramic cars and curated commentary. A regular hourly train on the same line is cheaper but no panorama guarantee. The Centovalli line has no branded Express at all — it's a regular regional train.
