Sort the waste
What this solves
Switzerland recycles a higher percentage than almost any country — but only because households follow the rules. Get the wrong bin (e.g. PET in general waste) and your whole bag is refused. Get the right canton variant and you save a CHF 5–15 surcharge per bag.
This tool gives the exact bin / collection day for the canton you choose. It also surfaces the "Sackgebühr" (bag-purchase tax) that funds the system — Zürich charges CHF 4.50 per 35L official bag.
How to read the results
- Bin type = which coloured bin or container.
- Bag type = the official branded bag required in many cantons.
- Collection day = typical day of the week for that category in the canton.
What this calculator ignores
- Building-level vs municipal-level rules — apartment complexes often have stricter recycling rooms.
- Hazardous waste — paint, chemicals, batteries go to specific collection points (Sammelstelle).
Common questions
Where do I buy the official bags?
At Coop, Migros, and most post offices. Each canton has its own design and colour. Buying official bags is the actual fee — the more you recycle, the fewer you need.
Can I recycle coffee capsules?
Depends on brand. Nespresso aluminium capsules can be recycled at Nespresso collection points (CHF 1 per 100g in store). Other capsules go to the regular bag if mostly plastic.
What if my apartment has no recycling room?
Every apartment building has one — usually underground or in the courtyard. Ask your landlord. Municipalities also have public recycling points (Sammelstelle).
