Decode a menu term
What this solves
Swiss menus in three languages (German / French / Italian) plus a fourth written dialect (Swiss German). Order "Gschwellti" and you'll get plain potatoes — but pair it with "Älplermagronen" and you'll get the Bernese classic. This tool decodes 60+ terms and filters by language + region.
How to read the results
- Term = the original Swiss word.
- Translation = what you actually get.
- Region = where this dish is most typical.
- Note = cultural or ordering tip.
What this tool ignores
- Very local dishes unique to one village.
- Restaurant-specific named dishes (e.g. "Gastro-Patrick" burger).
Common questions
What is Älplermagronen?
A Bernese dish — macaroni, potatoes, cheese, cream and onions, baked in a pan. Hearty comfort food. Vegetarian (historically — some versions now add bacon).
What is Capuns?
A Graubünden speciality — chard leaves wrapped around a dough with cured meat, served with cheese sauce. The canton dish.
Why are menu prices so high?
Wages, ingredients, and the small portion sizes on a la carte menus. Set menus (Menu du jour / Tagesteller) are 30–50% cheaper — usually CHF 18–28.
